Specialized cells that keep the heart beating have ability to regenerate after birth, study reveals – News-Medical.Net

Specialized cells that conduct electricity to keep the heart beating have a previously unrecognized ability to regenerate in the days after birth, a new study in mice by UT Southwestern researchers suggests. The finding, published online in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, could eventually lead to treatments for heart rhythm disorders that avoid the need for invasive pacemakers or drugs by instead encouraging the heart to heal itself.

Australian researchers hope to switch on sight with new gene therapy – News-Medical.Net

Australian researchers are developing a new gene therapy which they hope will switch on sight by regenerating light-sensing photoreceptor cells in the retina at the back of the eye. Billy Morton, the face of this years Hope in Sight Giving Day, was first diagnosed with the rare genetic disease choroideremia in his early teens and has experienced a progressive loss of night and peripheral vision. He hopes gene therapy might one day make a difference for people with the same condition

Chennai-based institute to begin clinical trial on stem cell therapy for liver disease – The New Indian Express

Express News Service CHENNAI: Doctors at the Stem Cell Research Centre, Government Stanley Medical College Hospital (GSMCH), are in the process of recruiting patients for conducting phase I and II clinical trials of Stem Cell Therapy for end-stage liver disease to assess its safety and efficacy. The clinical trial comes as a significant move as presently, liver transplant is the only treatment available for end-stage liver disease, but scarcity of donor organs necessitates alternative modalities. The Stem Cell Research Centre in July 2020 received approval from the Central Drug Standard Control Organisation (CDCSO) to conduct clinical trials after animal trails showed promising results, said Dr S Jeswanth, Director, Institute of Surgical Gastroenterology and Principal Investigator, Stem Cell Research Centre, GSMCH
